"Adding calorie information to pet food labels could help reduce pet obesity," a veterinary group told the Food and Drug Administration last week.
According to a McClatchy Newspapers report, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) said listing the number of calories "per weight of food and per household items such as a can or a cup would prevent owners from overfeeding their pets."
The Pet Food Institute disagreed, saying the labels are "unnecessary" and "won't prevent obesity in pets," according to the report. Serving sizes are already listed on pet food labels and calorie information is available through food manufacturers, the group said.
According to the AVMA, 54 million pets in the U.S. are overweight.
